Academics have spent decades on the puzzle that calm stocks seem to return as much as wild ones with less risk. If that free lunch existed in India this past decade, this screen should have caught it. We opened it up to see whether it did, and what the strategy really is underneath.
The promise of the low risk anomaly is specific: the very calmest stocks should not just be safer, they should hold their own on return. So the first test is the obvious one. Line the market up from wildest to calmest and see whether the calm end actually paid.
It did not sort. Group every stock into ten buckets by how calm it was and the returns wander around with no real pattern, the calm buckets no better than the middling ones. The rank correlation was about −0.32, weak enough to call noise. In this decade, in this market, buying the very steadiest names did not buy you the anomaly's promised return. Calm predicted a calmer ride, and almost nothing about how much you made.
It gets sharper. Concentrate hardest into the ten steadiest stocks in the market and you got the lowest return of any version, about 8% a year. The best result came instead from the diversified, constrained build, which nearly matched the market with the gentlest ride of all, a fall of just 30%. The lesson inverts the usual one: with low volatility, do not chase the extreme. The screen's value is in broad, sensible defensiveness, not in hunting the single calmest names.
Ask what this screen most resembles and the answer is deflating: an ordinary mid cap blend, which it tracked at a correlation of about 0.94. Worse, measured against a plain equal weighted index it actually gave up a little ground, an alpha slightly below zero. So this is not a hidden source of return at all. It is a way of owning steady, mid sized companies, with a smoother ride and, on the numbers, a touch less money at the end.
Not for the investor chasing return, because on the numbers it delivered less. It is for a different person entirely: the one whose real enemy is not the market but their own hands, who sells in every panic and buys back too late. For them, a strategy that returns a shade less but is genuinely easy to hold can beat, in real life, an index they keep abandoning. Low volatility is not a return anomaly you exploit. It is a behavioural crutch you might rationally choose, with your eyes open to its price.
How much calm is worth how much return is a personal number, not a universal one. Blend a little momentum or value back in, loosen the constraint, lengthen the hold, and watch how the ride and the result move together. The right answer is the one you could actually stick to.
Two last checks make the risk concrete: what the basket was actually made of, by company size, and, instead of the single drawdown path, the worst fall you would have suffered no matter which month you started and held for five years.
